Add Protection To Your Home

Posted on 24th, Jun 2014

Adding protection to your home is necessary for today’s day and age as safety needs to be a priority. More violent crimes and burglaries occur than in years past and with the intelligence of today’s criminal; there are a number of ways for a thief to break into your home. There are a number of measures a home-owner can take to safe-proof their home, including the following.

Steps to Take to Add Protection to Your Home

  • Being on the safe side is much better than being unprepared, and it may mean the difference of your values remaining your values, as well as your life. If you are moving to a new location or in search of a new home or apartment, you need to ensure to check the crime rate in the area to ensure that you aren’t setting yourself up for security hardships.
  • If you are moving into a new home, have a security expert evaluate the property to ensure its security is optimal. Many police departments also provide property security checks to ensure the home is of top security.
  • Never hide a key outside your home just in case you lose or lock your key in the home. Outside hidden keys are too easy for burglars to find, no matter how well they are hidden. Instead, have a spare set of keys that you leave with a trusted neighbor or family member, so when you find yourself in the situation of a lockout or lost key, you are able to call an individual.
  • Bushes can be heaven to a burglar; therefore, trim all bushes around your home and keep them manicured in a manner where an intruder would have trouble hiding. Around entryways, this is especially important.
  • Set motion lights outside the home in dark areas that you don’t want to keep a light on, such as a backyard, etc. Always have your porch light and the light over the sliding glass door with adequate lighting and replace burnt light bulbs as soon as possible.
  • Do not leave your windows, fire escapes or any other access to the home open to let the fresh air in without the proper safety devices. Windows should not be opened wide enough for a person to fit through, nor should any other entry. An anti-lift device can prevent windows and sliding glass doors from being lifted out of its frame.
  • Use a combination of locks, as a door handle lock and deadbolt, which is added security.
  • Never has your street listed with your name in the phone book, which is a way for thieves to look you up. When they have your number and address, they are able to call to see when you are home. If you must have your address listed, don’t list your street number; list only your street name.
  • Do not leave notes for your kids or neighbors on the doors or mailboxes of your home as it is a signal that no one is at home.
  • Pay attention to calls by installing an answering machine on your phone, which will signal when you have suspicious calls. Never announce that you are not home, just not able to come to the phone.
  • If a security alarm is in your budget, consider one as they work wonders in steering thieves away from home.
  • Decals are also a great security tool, which can make a burglar re-think targeting the home. There are various decals on the market as those that claim the home is protected by surveillance or security alarm.
  • Always make sure all windows, doors and sliding glass doors have the proper burglar proof locks.
