What does a locksmith exactly deal with?
Posted on 8th, Jun 2017
A couple of years ago from today, when the security was not so much of a big deal and technology was still limited to some extent, locksmiths weren’t exactly what they are today. Back then, locksmiths were mostly responsible for the task of duplicating keys, breaking locks or picking them (in case of lockouts) and at most extracting broken keys from door locks or padlocks. The high end locksmiths dealt with safes and vaults at times, but only in a limited manner.
Today, with so much addition to the field of security and technological advancements, a locksmith is expected to be much more than what they used to be only a few years ago. And as a result, they have to be what their clients expect of them. A locksmith in today’s world, needs to have sound knowledge about how to deal with the classic doorknob/door-lock to high-end security systems involving CCTV cameras and surveillance and digitally restricted access systems.
On a day to day basis, we don’t realise how much of our life is dependent on security that we take for granted as if it were our right. To be fair, the security we are provided for our homes, businesses, cars and possessions, is most likely possible only because of locksmiths.
Currently, locksmiths are divided into 3 broad categories:
1. Residential Locksmiths
Residential Locksmiths are – as you can guess from the name – mostly responsible for dealing with security issues related to someone’s place of living. A house, an apartment, a farmhouse, whatever it may be. It includes services like duplicating keys, rekeying locks, replacing, repairing and installing locks, door lock installation and repair and providing emergency lock-out assistance.
2. Commercial Locksmiths
Commercial Locksmiths usually deal with security issues or solutions related to commercial areas, which may include malls, business centers and commercial complexes of almost any type.
With the addition of providing all the services that a residential locksmith does, they are mostly responsible for churning out a sound security plan for a commercial center. This includes installing and implementing digital access systems, CCTV cameras and surveillance and other equipment necessary to provide a complete security solution.
3. Automotive Locksmiths
This is a really simple one. Automotive locksmiths, the name gives it all away. These locksmiths usually deal with locks and key related issues of automobiles. This includes duplicating car keys, transponder key duplicate, broken key extraction, reprogramming ECU for new transponder and providing assistance in a lock-out situation.
